Rachel Weisz lends support to calls for stricter privacy laws

By • Filed in: Interviews

London, November 28 (ANI): Rachel Weisz has joined the growing number of people in Britain asking for tighter privacy laws.

At the moment there is no specific privacy law in England and Wales. However, people in the public eye have increasingly used the Human Rights Act – in particular Article Eight, outlining the ‘right to private and family life’ – to defend their privacy.

The Mummy actress said that although she “never had the direct experience of being terrorised by the press”, she was in favour of a privacy law.

“It seems there should be some [privacy] law in place to stop that happening, that’s my knee-jerk reaction,” the Telegraph quoted Weisz as saying on BBC 1′s The Andrew Marr Show.

”What a celebrity is up to is very interesting to the public, but it’s not of public interest, is it?” she said.

In the wake of the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World, Britain had recently set up the Leveson Inquiry into culture, practice and ethics of the press.

Those who have given evidence to the inquiry so far include actor Hugh Grant, actress Sienna Miller, author JK Rowling and comedian Steve Coogan. All of them have complained about being pursued by the press

Rachel Weisz has voiced her thoughts on the issue of privacy law in the UK.

Although Weisz admitted that she has “never had the direct experience of being terrorised by the press”, she still supports a stricter privacy law.

“What a celebrity is up to is very interesting to the public, but it’s not of public interest, is it?” the Deep Blue Sea actress said on the BBC One programme The Andrew Marr Show.

She added: “I don’t think it’s important for people to know about what’s in the rubbish bins. It seems there should be some [privacy] law in place to stop that happening, that’s my knee-jerk reaction.”

Weisz also praised Hugh Grant‘s efforts to call for action in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.

In April, Grant, who is a member of the Hacked Off campaign group, carried out his own investigation by bugging a conversation with an ex-News of the World journalist, after he suspected his phone messages had been intercepted by a private investigator.

Earlier this month, former Formula One boss Max Mosley won his legal action against News of the World for violating his privacy.

Comedian Steve Coogan recently claimed that reporters searched for details about his private life by digging through his rubbish bins.

Rachel Weisz: I was a strong-minded child

By • Filed in: Interviews

Rachel Weisz doesn’t like admitting she got “expelled” from school as it makes her mother “very upset”.

The British actress was a confident and opinionated youngster. She often caused trouble at school due to her inquisitive personality, although she doesn’t like to bring it up in front of her parents.

“I’m not at all certain about the origins of my brazen personality. My father was an inventor – a nutty professor type. I had a chemistry set in the shed, and I liked to mix things up. I wanted to discover something important. I always felt a bit like a misfit,” she explained in an interview with Psychologies magazine.

“I was a tomboy. I also had a problem with authority. If a teacher told me to stop doing something, I didn’t see why I should listen. So I was politely asked to leave one school when I was 14. Please don’t say I was expelled. It will get my mother very upset. I was ‘asked to leave’, that’s the official line.”

Rachel insists she always had a rebellious streak. The stunning star caused mischief throughout her childhood.

“I was always considered the rebellious one and even at boarding school I connected with a similarly social agitator type,” she revealed.

“We were assigned to a separate dormitory so we wouldn’t contaminate the other girls with our radical ideology.”

Rachel Weisz’s Unemployment Worries

Rachel Weisz is always worried she will be unemployed even though she’s been working constantly for the past few years.

Rachel Weisz is always worried she will be unemployed.

The Oscar-winning actress – who married James Bond star Daniel Craig earlier this year – admits she is constantly concerned she will not have any work even though she has been working constantly for the last few years.

She said: “I know I’m doing more than when I started. I don’t really know if it ever gets easier.

“We all love to get jobs, but every actress is worried that they’re gonna be unemployed even at times when you’re doing very well.

The British actress will soon be seen in the role of Evanora, the sister of the Wicked Witch of the West in Sam Raimi’s ‘Wizard of Oz’ prequel ‘Oz, The Great and Powerful’, and she reveals she is trying not to judge her while playing her.

She told Total Film magazine: “I don’t really think of her as evil. The Wicked Witch of the East knows how to get what she wants, I guess.

“I mean she’s bad, she’s very, very bad, but you know I try not to judge her while I’m playing her.”

Everyone has Bollywood pals: Rachel Weisz

By • Filed in: Interviews

She is an Academy award winner and the better half of James Bond star Daniel Craig, But would you believe what’s occupying Hollywood actor Rachel Weisz’s mind? A chance to befriend Bollywood stars!

“Nowadays, a lot of Hollywood actors have Bollywood friends, so they keep interacting and share talks about them.

I haven’t met any Bollywood actors, and I would love to meet them,” says the 41-year-old, who wouldn’t mind shaking a leg in a Hindi flick.

“I’m currently packed with too many responsibilities, but if a good script just comes to my being, I would love to work on it in near future,” she says.

And, of course, travel the country. “I would love to come to India for pleasure because I have heard so much about it — the spirituality that the country holds, being immensely rich in culture and being the largest movie makers in the world,” says Weisz, who’ll be next seen in The Whistleblower. Based on the real story of a policewoman who risks her own safety to uncover a child trafficking scandal, the thriller opens in India on October 21.

So what’s it like to be married to Mr Bond? “It is good … Daniel is a great person. He completely lives his life, like there’s no tomorrow and he’s into the most unusual things always,” she says, adding, “He is actually the same on screen and off it.” Ask her why the couple doesn’t talk much about their marriage and she says, “After marriage, we both decided that we won’t be talking about our personal lives much, and would keep it to ourselves. We wanted to be great actors and not great celebrities.”

The actor will be seen on screen with her hubby in their next film, Dream House. “He’s a great co-actor. He leaves an impression which is hard to forget, and tries to do his work whole-heartedly,” she says.

Rachel Weisz talks about the love story behind ‘Dream House’

By • Filed in: Interviews

Rachel Weisz fell in love with her husband Daniel Craig on the set of “Dream House” and said the dark film was not just a terrifying thriller, as it was grounded in a love story.

“It’s very romantic and just unusual,” Weisz said of the script in an interview provided by Universal Pictures. “I’ve never read anything that quite had the same tone of romance and the supernatural and horror and it’s a love story as well.”

“Dream House” follows a family whose new home becomes their worst nightmare. Will Atenton (Craig) and his wife Libby (Weisz) move their family to New England for a change of pace. But they soon discover a woman and her two daughters were killed in the house, and everyone thinks the father did it. Now the killer is after Atenton’s family and he must discover the truth about the murder to protect those he loves.

“I play Libby, Will Atenton’s wife. I’m in the suburbs, which is not somewhere I fit into comfortably, but my husband’s bought us a big house so I’m happy to be raising the girls there,” Weisz said. “I think I’m a bit of a fish out of water but actually, my character never has a scene outside of the house — I’m in my ‘dream house’ the whole time.”

The movie also stars Naomi Watts as the family’s mysterious neighbor, Ann Patterson who knows more than she will admit.

“Ann Patterson, who lives across the street from us is played by Naomi Watts and throughout the film, she knows the secret of Will’s identity and the secret of the murders,” Weisz continued. “She basically knows the story that the audience won’t know, so you need an actress who can portray a lot of reactions and a lot of sensitivity because you will sense from her that there is something troubling her and there is a secret but she won’t say what and I think that’s something Naomi can portray with great delicacy. She’s got a lot of complexity and she’s the kind of actress that you can just see things float across her face without having dialogue because she can’t say it.”

The film was directed by six-time Oscar nominated director Jim Sheridan, who helmed “Brothers,” “In America,” “In the Name of the Father” and “My Left Foot.”

“Jim Sheridan is directing this movie and what he brings to this film that is unique is Jim Sheridan,” Weisz said of Sheridan, laughing. “He’s the most unique human being I’ve ever come across in my whole life. He’s a story teller.”

In June, Weisz, 41, and Craig, 43, tied the knot in a low-key wedding in upstate New York, spokespeople for both stars told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the time. Just four people attended the wedding – Daniel’s daughter Ella, 18, Weisz’s son Henry, 5, and two friends.

Filming for “Dream House” began in January 2010 and around the end of last year, the two were photographed in public and were said to have spent Christmas together.

In mid-2010, Weisz and boyfriend Darren Aronofsky, Henry’s father and the director of the ballet thriller “Black Swan,” broke up after nine years together.

Craig split from girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell, a producer, last year as well. Ella’s mother is Craig’s ex-wife, Scottish actress Fiona Louson. The two were married between 1992 and 1994.

Weisz played Evelyn in the “Mummy” action films and also starred in the 2008 romantic comedy “Definitely, Maybe” as well as the thriller “The Lovely Bones.” She won an Oscar for her role in the 2005 film “The Constant Gardener.” Craig starred in James Bond films such as “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace” and appeared in the recent sci-fi western “Cowboys & Aliens.” He will next star in the upcoming remake of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”

The hard-working Rachel Weisz

By • Filed in: Interviews

Rachel Weisz says she knew she had big shoes to fill stepping into the emotionally wrought role of Hester Collyer in The Deep Blue Sea, a film adaptation of the famous 1952 play.

The Deep Blue Sea tells the story of the sheltered young wife of an elderly judge who impetuously throws it all away to be with a hard-drinking, but vibrantly alive, Second World War pilot with whom she shares an obsessive, ultimately destructive, love. Peggy Ashcroft, Vivien Leigh, Penelope Keith and Blythe Danner have all taken a run at the main character – often considered one of the greatest parts for an actress in modern theatre.

Rachel Weisz happy to juggle movies

By • Filed in: Interviews

Rachel Weisz is enjoying promoting three movies at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Hollywood star is at the prestigious event to talk about The Deep Blue Sea, 360 and Page Eight. She’s isn’t stressed about her heavy workload though, insisting too much is being made out of it.

“You mean because I have three films here? No. The Deep Blue Sea is the only leading role. The others were ensembles. So the short answer is, no,” she replied, when asked if she’s the hardest working woman in showbiz. “It’s very staggered out.”

Rachel portrays Hester Collyer in The Deep Blue Sea, about a woman who becomes caught up in an affair with a pilot. 360 is about the effect of social backgrounds on relationships, while Page Eight is a spy thriller.

As well as discussing her upcoming releases, Rachel is due to start shooting new movies soon. She’s landed a role in Oz: The Great and Powerful as evil witch Evanora and is also starting work on the new Bourne movie.

“How do I do it? I just do it. The different costumes help a lot,” she laughed.

Rachel attended a party for The Deep Blue Sea on Sunday, which led to an embarrassing incident. An after-party for Emily Blunt’s new release Your Sister’s Sister was also being staged – and it’s a movie Rachel pulled out of.

“It was a strange and uncomfortable moment,” a source told New York Post. “It’s always difficult when a star drops out.”

Rachel handled things well though, stopping to speak to Emily and the movie’s director Lynn Shelton before continuing her night on another level of the Soho House Pop-Up space.

Interview: A spy in the house of love

By • Filed in: Interviews

Since she started dating Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz has shunned the limelight. Even now, she remains at a distance. In the first interview since their marriage, she tells Carole Cadwalladr about her new MI5 thriller, kissing Bill Nighy – and what it’s like having spooks in the family

Oh, it was very different the last time the Observer interviewed Rachel Weisz. Last time around, back in 2005, Weisz had yet to be propelled into the Hollywood A-list. The Constant Gardener, the film for which she would win an Oscar, was just on the cusp of being released. And doing an interview with a journalist from the Observer involved a leisurely lunch at a fashionable Manhattan restaurant and then, as Sean O’Hagan, the interviewer, notes, “she will ring later to rave about a Tobias Wolff short story whose name escapes her while we speak”.

The Natural: Rachel Weisz

By • Filed in: Interviews

For WSJ.’s September fashion shoot, actress Rachel Weisz, star of the upcoming films ‘The Whistleblower’ and ‘Dream House,’ gives menswear a feminine gloss.
There was a provocative energy running through our cover shoot, perhaps because less than two weeks later Rachel Weisz surprised the world with her impromptu marriage to actor Daniel Craig. Weisz is an actress who couldn’t be more womanly, and somehow seems even more so wearing the masculine-inspired tailored looks of the fall. Those interesting, contradictory layers mirror Weisz’s own complexity. She is a Cambridge graduate who has dabbled in modeling; a mother of a 5-year-old son with previous boyfriend director Darren Aronofsky; a movie star, who, even married to James Bond, manages to evade the paparazzi; an accomplished actress equally memorable in thoughtful, dramatic films such as “The Constant Gardener” and high-octane blockbusters such as “The Mummy.”

Weisz was perfectly at ease on set in Brooklyn, taking an active role in the session, swapping ideas with photographer Collier Schorr and suggesting poses that would best flatter the outfits. While deferring to stylist Natasha Royt, she still demonstrated a keen ability to find the best angles for each look but avoided falling victim to fashion. When a pair of stunning high heels felt a bit too perilous, Weisz advocated for her feet, politely requesting a change.

We chose Schorr for her body of work exploring androgynous sexuality, and she was able to pare back Weisz’s naturally sensual look in a modern way. “Collier’s a wonderful photographer, a very interesting lady. I worked with her when I first came to New York about nine years ago,” Weisz recalls. “It’s a different experience than being photographed by a man. She knows how to take a portrait in that she keeps you alive, she’s connected to you, talking to you.”

At this moment, Weisz is riding the crest of a wave. September will see the release of “Dream House,” a horror film starring Weisz and Craig, and she recently completed work on an untitled film by Terrence Malick, whom she describes as “a hero of mine.” Soon she will begin filming the reboot of the Bourne franchise with Jeremy Renner. But for now, the British newlywed is happy in her adopted home of New York. “It’s a great, great city. I love it, I really love it,” she says. “You don’t have to do anything except walk and there’s so much life on the street from all over the world.”
